Recently, Xueersi announced that its intelligent education hardware products, such as learning devices and practice devices, will be integrated with the DeepSeek AI model. By embedding the "deep thinking mode," it aims to comprehensively upgrade the AI learning experience for users and redefine intelligent tutoring scenarios. The new features are expected to be progressively available on relevant models starting in February.
"Xueersi is actively embraces the most advanced and cutting-edge technological capabilities in the industry, introducing reasoning models represented by DeepSeek, and integrating them with our self-developed MathGPT to provide users with more powerful and intelligent learning assistance services," said a Xueersi technology spokesperson. The continuously upgraded AI capabilities not only help children improve their problem-solving skills during the learning process but also cultivate habits of deep thinking.
This means that Xueersi's intelligent education hardware products will be supported by multiple large models, including DeepSeek and MathGPT.
Since January, DeepSeek has gained global attention by virtue of its powerful language comprehension and generation capabilities, its ability to process various knowledge information quickly and accurately handling various knowledge information, complex problem decomposition, and multi-modal interactions, attracting global attention. DeepSeek's "deep thinking mode" aligns well with educational scenarios.
A spokesperson for Xueersi's intelligent hardware stated that the company is developing a "deep thinking mode" based on DeepSeek’s capabilities, which ensures precise results and a visible process.
When children encounter difficult problems and call Xueersi's intelligent assistant, "XiaoSi," it will combine models like DeepSeek and MathGPT to not only provide suitable answers but also display the deep thinking process, similar to DeepSeek.
MathGPT itself does not directly give answers but instead guides step-by-step and provides solving steps. Both models have unique but similar approaches.
The biggest challenge of large model applications in education is the hallucination issue. Xueersi CTO Tian Mi mentioned that based on Xueersi's knowledge base and user profile database, the company is effectively mitigating the hallucination issue through retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques.
In other words, by leveraging MathGPT's precise knowledge point analysis and DeepSeek's strong language guidance capabilities, Xueersi learning devices will help children think heuristically, building a "thinking scaffold" through knowledge tracing and logical reasoning. This will transform standard problem-solving processes into perceptible thinking paths, providing children with comprehensive inspiration and guidance from AI's thought processes.
This emphasis on the deep thinking process is more in line with the essence of education and students' learning needs.
Since its establishment, TAL Education Group has always emphasized investment in the technology field, establishing the "AI Lab" in 2017. In 2019, the Ministry of Science and Technology approved the establishment of the "National New Generation AI Open Innovation Platform for Smart Education" relying on TAL. In May 2023, TAL developed the "MathGPT," becoming the first education technology company in China to enter the field of educational vertical models through mathematical reasoning and later expanding to all subjects.
Based on MathGPT, TAL also launched the "Ask Anytime" app, an AI one-on-one math tutor application where users can input problems via images, and the AI tutor will provide step-by-step explanations through interactive dialogue.
Additionally, MathGPT is embedded into intelligent education hardware and learning services.
Learning devices and other intelligent learning hardware are excellent carriers for children to use AI and experience large models. Currently, Xueersi Xpad and practice devices already feature several capabilities developed based on large models, such as XiaoSi dialogue, Chinese and English essay assistants, and AI problem-solving.
Last year, XiaoSi, the intelligent assistant on Xueersi Xpad, was activated 230 million times. Children's questions covered a wide range of topics, including knowledge exploration, daily life, and emotional expression.
The collaboration with DeepSeek will further enhance the role of intelligent education hardware. By jointly discovering and solving problems, a different user experience will emerge.
The Xueersi technical spokesperson revealed that the team is exploring how to better integrate industry-leading models like DeepSeek into the ecosystem of learning devices, expanding XiaoSi’s "circle of friends."
For example, when users ask XiaoSi questions, they can receive responses generated by different models simultaneously, with clear source displays, allowing users to compare and engage in further independent thinking.
"This can give children a more intuitive understanding and perception of large model technology, gradually building the ability to collaborate with large models," said the Xueersi technology spokesperson, emphasizing that seamlessly embedding large models into learning scenarios from an early age will help children develop a mindset of AI collaboration, fostering core digital literacy in digital natives.
With one hand engaged in self-developing models and the other in external cooperation, it is evident that Xueersi maintains an open attitude towards new technologies.
Not only Xueersi, but companies like DingTalk, NetEase Youdao, and Yunxuetang have also announced embracing DeepSeek fully.
In the edtech field, companies like TAL and Youdao, despite having self-developed models, recognize the complementary nature between vertical domain models and general models. Users require both types.
Each industry has its depth, and this depth is precisely the core of solving user problems and creating user value. For instance, dealing with issues like English phonetic transcription pronunciation and mathematical formula recognition may be better handled by vertical models.
Additionally, companies focusing on vertical domains are increasingly concerned with contextualization and application.
As more and more edtech companies embrace the AI technology wave, new learning methods will emerge for users.
