[GET2023] TAL Education Group's Laura: Technology is very important for achieving large-scale personalized education

From October 17 to 19, 2023, Jiemodui hosted the "Vigor Innovation: Further Advancement in Education and Technology" GET2023 EdTech Conference in Beijing. On the 17th, during the Leadership Forum, Laura, Executive President of TAL Education Group, delivered a keynote speech titled "Quality Education Facing the Future."

Discussing the concepts of quality education and competency education, Laura believes that merely imparting knowledge is utterly insufficient. The focus should shift from primarily imparting knowledge to cultivating comprehensive abilities, and ultimately to nurturing an individual's thinking habits, character, and behavioral habits.

Laura emphasized that technology plays a very important role in realizing inclusive education in the future and achieving large-scale personalized education. "As an educational technology company, we are deeply aware of our responsibilities and mission, and we will strive to make due contributions to the entire education industry and ecosystem."

TAL Education Group's Executive President Laura is currently sharing.

The following is the edited transcript of the speech:
Today, I will share TAL’s perspective on "Quality Education for the Future." From the national and societal levels, it aims to cultivate socialist builders and successors who are well-rounded in Moral, Intellectual, Physical, Aesthetic, and Labor Education.

First and foremost, creativity is crucial. It is important to have the ability to continuously and lifelong learn, possess a growth mindset as part of lifelong growth, connect well with people, express oneself effectively, and develop a good altruistic spirit. The ability to make oneself happy and content is also vital for future-oriented skills.

As previously mentioned, if we want to cultivate future-oriented skills, we must first answer what the future looks like. In 1985, experts proposed the "VUCA era," and in recent years, the term "BANI era" has often been mentioned. Regardless of the terminology, the key point is that the future has three significant characteristics: asymmetry, uncertainty, and complexity.

While uncertainty and complexity are easy to understand, what about asymmetry? There’s a chance that cutting-edge technologies of the future may be accessed and controlled by a privileged minority first. A small group with such capabilities may be able to change an industry or disrupt a large company, embodying the potential for "David to defeat Goliath." These are the prominent features of the future.

Given these characteristics, merely imparting knowledge is insufficient. Thus, how can we shift from knowledge-based teaching to cultivating comprehensive abilities, and ultimately to nurturing an individual’s thinking habits, character, and behavioral habits? Such kind of whole-person cultivation education is critically important.

In our course design, we also respond to the national guidelines. All activities are based on scientific experiments, and students must engage hands-on, understand the scientific principles, and ultimately create tangible works.

This year’s conference theme is education and technology. TAL is an education technology company, and in May, we launched a MathGPT. Developing a large model for mathematics is challenging. Over the past 20 years, we have accumulated millions of question banks, teaching materials, and various videos, allowing us to explore more in the field of large mathematical models.

Additionally, we have the Xueersi Xpad. We leverage our 20-year content accumulation with AI capabilities to achieve personalized and large-scale tailored teaching, integrating it into the hardware. It was launched in the market this February.

Finally, I’d like to share about M School. M School serves public schools and institutions, embedding TAL’s capabilities into this system. The original platform was for private use, but the current platform is open and shared. We aim to empower more training institutions and public schools through this open platform. Comparative experiments have shown that using the system can save at least 60 minutes per day.

As an extracurricular training institution, TAL and Xueersi’s primary goal is to become a company recognized by society and the nation, satisfying our customers. Extracurricular training institutions complement public schools and have unique value. Our knowledge and accumulated technological innovations are crucial for achieving inclusive education and large-scale personalized teaching in the future. This is the contribution we hope to make to the entire educational industry and ecosystem as a technology education company.

Let us face the future together and explore the future of education. May every child and everyone here enjoy health, happiness, and a brighter future.
