Since 2008, TAL Education Group has been committed to charity. From education equity and innovation to industry promotion, TAL is striving to promote the development of educational charity through three levels.
"As an education technology company, we are committed to promoting educational fairness and supporting educational equity through the internet and artificial intelligence," said Zhang Bangxin, founder and CEO of TAL Education Group.
Charity Route Began in 2008
TAL Education Group is a tech education company that serves public education and supports private education in a global scale through smart education solutions and open platforms.
Adhering to the concept that "providing quality education is the greatest charity," TAL is using technology to promote equitable education. Since 2008, TAL has begun exploring charitable initiatives.
In 2008, after the Wenchuan earthquake in China, TAL donated 2 million RMB to build two "Hope Elementary Schools" in the region, with the hope of improving educational conditions in poor rural areas.
Although the construction of Hope Elementary Schools has largely improved education in impoverished areas, the lack of quality teaching staff and educational products remains an issue that's hard to address.
In 2012, TAL launched the "Same Classroom" support program, providing various forms of support such as summer teaching and teacher training to help children and teachers in areas with limited education resources enjoy high-quality teaching and training resources and promote rural education development.
In 2013, TAL established the first non-public fund foundation in the domestic education and training industry. With the aim of helping more people enjoy equal access to education resources, TAL is working to promote educational charity from the perspectives of educational equity, innovation, and industry promotion to address education issues.
Launching "Hope Online" and "Dual-Teacher Classrooms"
In terms of promoting education equity, TAL launched the "Hope Online" education platform with the mission of "using technology to promote equal education." Together with the Cyberspace Administration of China, the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, and the China Internet Development Foundation, TAL is jointly promoting educational poverty alleviation initiatives.
Foping County in Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province, was previously a national poverty-stricken county. In October 2016, TAL initiated educational information cooperation with Foping County and tailored a county-level education solution for them. By introducing high-quality courses from "Hope Online" online, and with the help of local XRS learning centers, a future classroom is established to build an informationalized experiment class.
Jimunai is a small town in the remote northern border of Xinjiang. The area lacks high-quality educational resources, and teaching concepts and methods are relatively outdated. In September 2017, TAL collaborated with the China Development Research Foundation and the government of Jimunai County, Xinjiang, to donate the "Hope Online" platform to help construct an educational resource system. Meanwhile, they introduced "dual-teacher" classrooms, live broadcasts, and teacher training to promote educational informationization in Jimunai, and improve local educational quality.
In May 2018, after TAL set up the educational resource system for Jimunai Middle School, they officially introduced the "dual-teacher classrooms."
Yu Chengmiao, a teacher at the XRS Beijing campus under TAL Education Group, now has an additional task. Every Wednesday afternoon, he appears promptly in the live classroom in Beijing Jingyi Building to conduct online classes with students from Jimunai Middle School. "Their enthusiasm for learning is very high, and they are very smart," Mr. Yu said. He feels an increased concern, knowing that children at the other end of the screen, thousands of miles away, are waiting for his classes.
As a result of such enthusiasm for learning, students' grades and learning performance have improved. Cao Wenwen, a local offline tutor in Jimunai, mentioned that "previously, students' grades were severely polarized, and now the overall grades have not only improved, but also the phenomenon of the gap in grades has disappeared. Many students' performance has improved, and their interest and confidence in learning have also grown." The "dual-teacher classrooms" allow children in remote areas to have access to quality teaching from renowned teachers and enjoy high-quality education, providing them with a sense of courage and hope for the future.
Delivering "AI Teachers" to Remote Mountain Areas
Zhaojue County in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, is the largest Yi inhabitant county in China and a key county for national poverty alleviation. For the Yi children in the deep mountains, not being able to speak Mandarin is their biggest obstacle in communicating and learning from the outside world.
Addressing this issue, TAL utilized its own educational research and programming resources to develop an "AI Mandarin Teaching System," providing this benefit to children in remote mountain areas. The "AI teacher" can provide real-time intelligent evaluation and correction of children's Mandarin pronunciation.
In October 2018, TAL signed a network help agreement with the People's Government of Liangshan Prefecture. This involves providing "AI Mandarin Teaching Systems" to more schools in Liangshan Prefecture, as well as planning to deploy the "Hope Online" platform's educational resources across the entire basic education stage from elementary to high school, to help achieve educational equity.
As of now, the "Hope Online" project sites have covered multiple areas, including Foping in Shaanxi, Jimunai in Xinjiang, Wangmo and Bijie in Guizhou, and have explored flexible and operational educational poverty alleviation models adapted to each local situation.
As an example, last summer, more than 70 eighth graders at Dayi Middle School in Wangmo County, Guizhou, received remote "1 on 1" English tutoring. Every night from 9:00 to 10:30, over 70 volunteer teachers recruited by TAL provided "1 on 1" teaching sessions for local students through the "Hope Online - Live Cloud Online Teaching Platform."
Extending Poverty Alleviation to Preschool Education
TAL also extended its efforts in educational poverty alleviation to the preschool education stage.
In September 2017, the Haomeng Family Planning Service Station in Guizhou Province, China Development Research Foundation, and the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education hosted the "Working to Achieve 'One Village, One School' by 2020 - A Special Symposium on Preschool Education in Rural Areas of Poverty" which was supported by the TAL Future Public Welfare Foundation.
In the same year, TAL, together with the China Development Research Foundation, supported the improvement of teaching quality at rural mountain kindergartens.
During several visits to the "Mountain Village Kindergarten" in Qixingguan District, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, TAL carried out activities such as donating books and stationery, teaching demonstration courses, and visiting poor children's families in the region. The intention was to enhance and promote preschool education in mountain villages, foster the development of talents in impoverished areas, and eliminate intergenerational poverty.
In June 2018, the TAL Future Public Welfare Foundation launched the "Starting Point Plan," which provides assistance to preschool education for poverty-stricken mountain areas through teacher training and educational resource delivery.
Committed to Educational Innovation and Industry Promotion
On the level of educational innovation, TAL Group has been committed to promoting the development of family education, leading the cognitive upgrade of Chinese family education, and guiding parents to become their children's best teachers, promoting the comprehensive and healthy development of children.
In 2018, TAL collaborated with the China Children and Teenagers' Fund to carry out the "Future Family Education Program," providing more diverse and targeted guidance services for family education through the establishment of parent-child reading rooms, parent-child family education lectures, and parent-child original story-sharing events.
On the level of industry promotion, TAL initiated the "Education Sharing Program," which collaborates with socially responsible companies and public welfare organizations across different sectors, allowing more children to have access to high-quality educational resources. It also established the Education Charity Alliance, which brings together various forces such as public welfare, enterprises, and the media, providing a new perspective to help solve education-related issues.
